I thought there was a difference between mounting the caliper in either the 9 o’clock or 3 o’clock position on the fronts of cars. One position lifted the car during heavy braking and one pulled the front end down. Or is that some sort of urban legend ?

If you are looking for a real reason is weight / Center gravity.
Out front with a couple extra pounds or kilograms could help.

Brakes work by converting motion into heat, so surely calipers aught to be placed in the best possible position for cooling them down . Also, the calipers need to be out of kept out any dirt if at all possible . I remember a motorbike, a Honda I think, that had its front discs completely shrouded .... That went too far in the keeping clean idea because the brakes over heated ! So I would say, where possible, place the caliper to the front of the hubs so the caliper body is in cooler air and where the body hides the brake pads from dirt . I would suggest that the calipers are placed high at the front so that the brake discs get a decent amount of cooling as well . Brembos are my favorite anchors . ATB, liking content .

I’ve always watched nascar and During pit stops, I would notice teams would usually have different Caliper positions. But I feel like it must be a weight bias / center of gravity thing, sometimes I see them mounted at 6 o’clock
