Kazan is in transit in the North Atlantic today south of Bermuda heading towards Cuba (June 10th, 2024). She is a Modernized Yasen class submarine. This is a general overview of Project 855. We are about to learn much, much more during her current deployment.

The guided missile submarine Severodvinsk renamed Yasen, now Yasen-M (Project 885M) is a series of advanced nuclear-powered guided missile submarines (SSGN) of the Russian Navy. These submarines represent a significant evolution in design and capability over their predecessors. Here are the key technical details:

Length: Approximately 130 meters (427 feet)
Beam: Approximately 13 meters (42.7 feet)
Displacement: Around 13,800 tons (submerged)

Type: Nuclear-powered
Reactor: OK-650V nuclear reactor
Propulsion System: One shaft with a pump-jet propulsor
Speed: Up to 35 knots (submerged)

Vertical launch system (VLS) for up to 32 Kalibr or Oniks cruise missiles
Capability to launch Tsirkon hypersonic missiles

Torpedo tubes (533 mm)
Capability to launch various torpedoes and anti-ship missiles

Sonar: Irtysh-Amphora sonar suite, including spherical bow sonar array
Combat System: Omnibus-5 combat management system
Electronic Warfare: Advanced electronic countermeasures and decoy systems

Automation: High degree of automation, reducing crew size

Stealth: Enhanced stealth features, including anechoic coating and quiet propulsion system. Unlimited range with nuclear propulsion, with endurance limited only by crew and provisions.

The Yasen-M submarines are designed to perform a wide range of missions, including anti-submarine warfare (ASW), anti-surface warfare (ASuW), strike missions against land targets, and intelligence gathering. Their advanced weaponry and stealth capabilities make them a formidable component of the Russian Navy's strategic assets.

2024 Update: Two more Yasen class submarines have been commissioned into the Pacific Fleet for a total of 4 active in the Russian Navy.
As many astute and long time members have noticed, this was first published on Patreon in 2020-21(ish). This is just the setup for my next video discussing the Russian Navy visit to Havana Cuba this week. That video will be out later this week.

SubBreif another excellent presentation, I love that your channel exists. Objective OSINT analysis of submarine warfare is a difficult concept due to more limited information sharing than the other disciplines and less kinetic combat use, but having a sub veteran (yourself) and a professional presentation and demeanor is just a gem. I especially appreciate this further in the contemporary days of more and more people trying to do the whole "OSINT analysis" thing (I actually researched and published a video myself on a different channel, so I have a seat, albeit a small one, at the table), and I wish more channels would follow your no-click bait, professional, presentation.

24:32 slide might answer your question why she isnt leaving the Barents sea, the cyrilic in white says "на страже Заполярья" which means "guarding the Arctic".

9:27 - indeed; especially, that P-800 Oniks has export version - Brahmos - widely used and I think without issues in India in various forms.

No caterpillar drive? No hard-nosed Russian captain with an inexplicably heavy Scottish brogue?

Big seawater scoop would be effective at lower speeds. This means less pump noise necessary at low speeds. It is a quieting feature.

I’ve always thought the history behind Russian subs is fascinating.

That main sea water scoop looks like a great way to snag the submarine on something near the bottom.
