Sibelius : 'En Saga' sous la direction de Mikko Franck

L'Orchestre philharmonique de Radio France dirigé par Mikko Franck interprète le poème symphonique "En Saga" de Jean Sibelius. Enregistré le 24 avril 2015 à l'Auditorium de la Maison de la Radio (Paris).

This piece of music MAY BE the “crowning glory” of all of Sibelius’s works!!! Absolutely “fantastic”, “gorgeous”, It’s a “LIVING THRIVING” organism, a living thing all its own! Once it’s in your blood, you’re “HOOKED” forever! The musicians must be overwhelmed by what they’ve collectively played! WOW!!!

This symphonic poem was the first work of Sibelius that caught my ears decades ago and since then i never had enough of its magic. I really love the tempo of this performance of En Saga for it evokes the coldness, haunting and mysteries of the untamed northern Finnish dark forest. The communication between the charming conductor and the fine orchestra is mesmerizing.

I've rarely seen such a communication and a attention between the conductor and the musicians. I love how fiercely and wholeheartedly he pointed at the first violist before leaving.

“Ach du Lieber, mein schatz”!!! “HEI”! “Mita Kuuluu”? Sibelius AT HIS VERY VERY FINEST!!! This fabulous music, like ALL his music, is a “living breathing It “THROBS”! His country Finland must have “infectuated him” beyond belief! His Violin Concerto itself stands with the VERY MOST WONDERFUL of all the violin concertos - “TUMULTUOUS”!!! Hard to listen to if you have a “difibrulator/pacemaker” like ol’ Mr. Thickey (81) - “Blows the circuits” right out of its box!! Mr. Mikko Frank sort of looks a little like the old time American actor “Peter Lorre”, whom most of you out there in TV land never heard of! You could call Mikko “blinkie” too, with all due respect. I especially loved those “dual violinists”, the Violist, & that tremendous Clarinet passage!! His gorgeous “haunting timbre” was a “high spot” for for me! Thank you LORD JESUS for “inventing” this thing called “MUSIC”!!! “Gesundheit” und pass da “LUTEFISK” poleaze! “Kiito”!

R.I.P. Louie Anderson.... Truly a great music enthusiast at heart. I was so sad to hear him pass away this year and I hope his musical career which started with the tuba has satisfied him to the end. Good night sweet prince.

Sibelius' tone poems transport me into a state of wonderment. The work of a true poet by a masterful composer.

I'm surprised people consider Sibelius music to be "cold". I'd rather say its glowing of emotional intensity. His orchestration may be on the darker side, but nuanced, colorful and expressionate all the same.

This performance of En Saga is one of the best I've ever heard (and I heard a few). The tempi are perfect, it keeps moving all the time but not dragging or rushing in any way (an exception perhaps being the tenuto at 11:40, which might be a little exaggerated). The orchestral balance is exquisite and the recording brilliant, bringing forth all fascinating details. And as for the music - well, it speaks for itself :-) Drama on the highest of levels. En sann saga - a true fairy tale.

Another victory for the Nordic Sound! From Grieg, Stenhammar, Berwald, to the greatest: Sibelius. "En saga", a tale, is almost as good as Tapiola, the one we are all waiting for. Another I am waiting for is "The Bard", a mysterious thing. But this uptaking I like very much!
