The gospel isn't God's plan to help rich people feel good at Christmas.

If the only thing Jesus is to us is "God with us" - if we interpret what is only an invitation to relationship - to be relationship - we'll end up in hell.

The baby in the manger is the appointed judge of the whole world.

Salvation isn't Emmanuel - it isn't "God with us" - it's "God in us". And God has never in dwelled anyone without their death - God is holy - he cannot exist alongside sinful flesh. Our death is repentance - turning from a life serving our selfish concerns to one in which God's concerns are our only concern.

So enough with your offers of easy healing - the only people who Jesus invited to come and drink of living water were those who already knew they were sinners. In true first world cheap gospel tradition this song offers healing to anyone who thinks it sounds like a nice idea. And forgiveness to anyone who simply breathes it in. Good luck with that - the only one who forgives is God - and the gospel in providing only a path to forgiveness - is no guarantee of it.
