Thermite welding demonstration of two rail joints at a museum. Thermite is a mixture of iron(III) oxide and aluminium granulate, which reacts exothermically above the ignition temperature. Temperatures of more than 2000°C can be reached.

I was shocked the first time that I saw this. I had no idea that they used thermite.

We had thermite grenades in the Army used for destroying weapons or anything you don't want the enemy to use. Lay one on a big block Chevy and it goes through it like a hot knife through butter.

Must be up to more than a million miles of welded rail. Watched one in person once. The benefits are staggering. Good job 👍

How did they keep this from being so sparkly? Every time I've seen a thermite reaction it's very active and makes a quite a mess.

When rails are welded, how do you allow for expansion and contraction?

I worked on the UPPR and did a lot of thermite welding and never saw a 5 gallon bucket used as the crucible. Maybe it's an update. Pretty different to watch from the way we did it back in the 80s.
