Quandary Peak Winter Sunrise Hike

We hiked up to the summit of Quandary Peak (14,265 ft) on February 29th, 2020, via the East Ridge trail.

Emily and I decided to summit Quandary by sunrise for our first ever winter 14er attempt. We left the lower winter trailhead at 3AM and made it to the summit by 6:20am for sunrise. We crushed it!

The conditions at the summit were approx. 20mph sustained winds with a few 30mph gusts. Temperature was 8 degrees F, but the felt like temperature was -9 degrees F considering the wind chill factor.

This video shows the summit of Quandary Peak at sunrise, along with the descent from the summit. Brought snowshoes but did not need anything more than spikes for the entire hike; however on the descent wind was blowing snow across the trail making it difficult to follow. There were no other hikers on the ascent, but on the trip back to the trailhead we passed roughly 50 people.

Quandary Peak is located in Breckenridge, Colorado; it's also the most climbed 14er in the state of Colorado.

Is there any significant avalanche danger on this route? Did you carry an avy beacon / gear with you on this?
