The first criterion for being a leader is you have to want to be one. Being a leader is like being a parent - anyone CAN be one but that doesn't mean everyone WANT to be or SHOULD be.

Leadership is like parenting in that both involve guiding and supporting others to reach their full potential. Just as parents nurture and develop their children, leaders must cultivate the skills, talents, and potential of their team members.
They must also provide clear direction, set expectations, and hold their team accountable for their actions. Effective leaders, like good parents, also prioritize communication, trust, and empathy. They listen actively, provide guidance and support when needed, and recognize and celebrate their team's achievements. Ultimately, both leadership and parenting require a deep commitment to the growth and development of others.

I love this. I come from a background in economics, and have frequently held the opinion that leaders of countries / companies / organizations should model their leadership in the same way a great parent would ideally run their household; encourage your kids to strive for better and be competitive at what they love doing... but also help pick them up when they fall and scrape their knee. That healthy balance of both free market competition and social services mixed together is why I think countries with mixed economies are among the best performing ones in the world in terms of happiness and overall well-being.

Beautifully put. If more people cared about their teams the way they (should) care about their families, we'd all thrive! 💖

If you want to build a great team, as a leader, you really need to take time and utmost dedication. That’s so true, it takes effort! Thank you for this video!

So correct! Sadly many companies seem to forget this. Furthermore they also forget that leading people also takes time, much time.
There is a lesson military leaders have to learn in my country: "Wer arbeitet kann nicht führen!" it verbatim translates to "He who works can not lead!" and it expresses that you can not do work and lead at the same time. Something, many companies ignore. They want their managers to do evaluations, prepare and make business decissions etc. AND simultaniously be good leaders.
But leading is timeconsuming work so one of the areas has to suffer. Most times it is the leadership that does because controling can not measure good leadership easily.
When I did consulting I always stressed this to companies and they always ignored it.

Agreed 100 percent...unfortunately many leaders of today (in companies) could really care about the mental health of their workers. To them they are just numbers. Numbers are down? Just fire them. Using the parent example, that's the same as : "Oh, the kids are costing us too much? Let's drop off the kids at an orphanage and not deal with them anymore." And when we look at the success of leadership from a numbers standpoint, what I described "makes them successful leaders".

Hey Simon, I read this book from Anne Helen Petersen and I really feel like she has a similar message from a different perspective. The book is called can't even and I think having a conversation with her on your channel would be very interesting. I live your message but I think it would be nice to have a different perspective as well
