Skin cells that I harvested from mouse were reprogrammed to become stem cells producing what is called induced Pluripotent stem (iPS) cells. Spontaneous contractions occurred after several weeks of growth suggesting differentiation of some cells into muscle cells.
The technique was first done by Shinya Yamanaka who subsequently won the Nobel Prize in 2012.
