Synthesis of benzoic acid via the Grignard reaction

Chemistry faculty at North Seattle College combine bromobenzene and magnesium turnings to generate a Grignard reagent, which is then reacted with carbon dioxide to produce benzoic acid. Also, why ether doesn't belong anywhere near an open flame.
