Ambassador Freeman is a career diplomat (retired) who was Assistant Secretary of Defense for International Security Affairs from 1993-94, earning the highest public service awards of the Department of Defense for his roles in designing a NATO-centered post-Cold War European security system and in reestablishing defense and military relations with China. He was Principal Deputy Assistant Secretary of State for African Affairs during the historic U.S. mediation of Namibian independence from South Africa and Cuban troop withdrawal from Angola.

Ambassador Freeman worked as Deputy Chief of Mission and Chargé d’Affaires in the American embassies at both Bangkok (1984-1986) and Beijing (1981-1984). He was Director for Chinese Affairs at the U.S. Department of State from 1979-1981. He was the principal American interpreter during the late President Nixon’s path-breaking visit to China in 1972. In addition to his Middle Eastern, African, East Asian and European diplomatic experience, he had a tour of duty in India.

Ambassador Freeman should be running our foreign policy, instead of having to send warnings from the sidelines. A remarkable intellect and clear understanding of the world.

Remarkable analysis; sober clarity regarding the issues of our time; and, obviously too controversial for the highly governed algorithm industrial complex to allow for a broader circulation of this critical understanding...too late, I still had access. I am so grateful for the generosity and courage of Ambassador Freeman and for the institutions which support his perspective.

This is an incredibly astute analysis of the current China/US relationship. This guy knows his stuff - and we would do good as a country to pay attention to his perspective.

Well worth listening. If this interview was pre-Putin's intervention in the Donbass then it would be very relavent. But Putin wants to recreate the Russian Empire and Xi re-shape the world order to make his ambitions easier. Those ambitions include taking over Taiwan and pushing America influence out of the Pacific. This will force all countries in the region to come to terms with. Think China take over of the SCS and the 14 points against Australia which basically said said said no criticism of China allowed while the CCP has a free hand in Australia's domestic political & economic affairs
