The Bad Batch Episode 5 Breakdown THE ANCIENT ZEFFO

the heart of the mountain is said to be an ancient cyrstal which is the key to an ancient power. Many in the chat thought of a Kyber crystal, but we need to remember this is before the Jedi, unless kybers had another use equally as valuable. Perhaps just as worship, who knows. Now of course it didn’t turn out to be a kyber in the end.

They make their way through the boobie trapped mountain, get separated, and Omega puts the compass in the wall and opens a new path for them. Echo, Tech and Wrecker make their own way through the tunnels as they all eventually band back together.

They all reconnect and come to a large door, opening it, they make their way through and to the crystal.
which is a rock that looks just like it’s from fifth element, as they take it, the ground shakes and the lights turn on. These lights are identical to the ones on Zeffo in Jedi Fallen Order. Zeffo is a planet covered in snow and ice, with ancient ruins and tombs dotting the landscape. It is home to the Zeffo species, a species of sentient beings with elongated heads and long, thin limbs. They were known for their architectural and engineering skills, and were responsible for building the tombs and ruins found on the planet. The Zeffo civilization was ancient and had collapsed long before the events of the game, leaving behind only their ruins and artifacts.
The planet also has a strong connection to the force, which drew the attention of the Jedi Order. The Jedi sent a team of researchers to study the planet and its ancient ruins, but they were all killed by the local wildlife.

The giant mech beast is activated after so many years and it’s walking with its four legs as it spits plasma on the land. Could it very well be the Zeffonians who made this massive mech beast?

They decide to the put the treasure back where they found it, which was the key. As this recurring small zillo beast type of creature keeps trying to eat them. It’s impervious to blaster fire, which reminds me a lot of the zillo beast, but of course it’s not. The mech beast is about to blow up their ship, as the crew put the key back in the slot, melting it, where the mech beast ends up imploding and falling over.

They walk back to the ship and get out of there.

So my question is will the Empire learn about this machine? Will they replicate it with some weaponry? Will they sense it via their electromagnetic sensors, perhaps? Much like Hunter did with this beast as it was powering up, before anyone else knew, kind of like a spidey-sense.

this episode was ok, it had a fun adventure feel to it but other than that nothing much happened. I was hoping for more exploration of the mech beast as it’s literally an ancient weapon that predates the Jedi which as now been activated and then destroyed. My main question is who built this machine? Was it the Rakatans? An ancient powerful and technologically advanced species that fought against the first force users, the J’edaiii? The Rakatans are an alien species that appear in the Star Wars expanded universe. They are an ancient and technologically advanced species that were one of the first to discover and harness the power of the Force. They were known for their Infinite Empire, which was a powerful civilization that existed around 30,000 BBY (Before the Battle of Yavin) and controlled much of the galaxy.
The Rakatans were skilled in the use of the Force and were able to create advanced technology such as the Star Forge, a massive space station that could create starships and droids. They also built the Hyperspace gateways that allowed them to travel through the galaxy quickly and easily.
Or could it be the Zeffo people from Fallen Order?

One of the themes with the Bad Batch is them starting to do more to help people against the growing power of the Empire. With these last two episodes we've seen Tech express doubts about and Sid and Hunter looking thoughtful about Omega's bonding with Phee. Maybe these last missions are making them start to think: Is this what we have become? All of skills and talents being wasted running missions for sketchy criminals and pirates. It maybe the catalyst for them looking to start using their talents for the good of the people oppressed by the empire and open to when Rex asks for their help.

Echo was right in Episode 1, "Our lives are like this because of Omega --- there are others out there who need our help. We've seen what the Empire is doing throughout the galaxy. We should be doing more." These last couple episodes just make this more true.

I’m disappointed that there wasn’t a tie in to the overall development of the empire, such as later on an empire survey team coming across the remains of this walking weapon and researching it towards the development of the Death Star laser

The “Heart of the Mountain” is also a reference to the Arkenstone of Erebor in the Hobbit. It was the goal of their quest.

When watching, I thought this episode seemed very Jedi Fallen Order and I knew some designs looked familiar. Now you've mentioned the Zeffo, it does make sense.

I like how echo is always on point and says that he doesn’t like all of it. He is a real clone. He is like the only one who is really grown up. I also wished we would know more about this machine. It’s way to big and to powerful to never mention it anymore

This felt like a Fallen Order type episode for sure especially with the puzzle scene.

The interesting thing about weapons is, you can learn quite a bit by trying to figure out what they were meant to destroy. Sure, a trebuchet can cause havoc against an enemy army, but the slow nature of arming and aiming it makes it's preferred target clear: fortified structures. This "Doomwalker", as I'll call it, can be similarly analyzed.

It has long spindly legs which would be difficult for most species to climb, and moves with surprising speed for something of its size. It's weapon fires down from above and does damage in a line, and acts completely autonomously. We also see it targeting technology: a droid, and a ship. What can we infer here?

I suspect that this superweapon was an automated purging system, meant to be sent to a planet with a developing pre-space civilization and break any potential for organized resistance. Whoever sent it would then be able to either conquer the world or, as I suspect is more likely, strip-mine its resources unopposed. Oddly, the planet seems to not have any signs of civilization or the potential for it -- it has native flora and fauna (the beast, and barren-looking twig plants, etc.), but seems to have a very sparse ecology overall. That suggests to me that either any civilization on this world was wiped out a long time ago, or it hasn't developed an ecology that can support large numbers of lifeforms. If we go off our theory that the Doomwalker was meant to be a civilization-breaker, two scenarios emerge: either it did it's job and was just never retrieved afterwards, or it was sent by mistake to a planet without civilization at all and simply never activated.

I feel like this episode will tie into a future game or something. Because it was a cool mystery that went nowhere so I gotta think it’ll be more explained at some point

I just finished Fallen Order a few days ago and I immediately thought "oh wow they're bringing the Zeffo into this" because the design and aesthetics of the machine are remarkably similar, gold, lots of moving walls, spherical environments... Even the head of the creature resembles the Zeffo a bit, and the lazer beam reminded me of the Temple Guardian. Definitely Zeffo. Pity they didn't name drop it, however no one should know the name anyway, so it's lore accurate.

The fact this predates the Jedi is really interesting I enjoy the adventure type things fine with the show mainly because it extends everything

I would not be surprised if this Zeffo walker was actually laying the ground for one of the new threats we're expecting to see in "Ahsoka".

I kept waiting for Nathan Drake to show up and say “The heart is mine”, then Indiana Jones steps in and goes “No, it belongs in a museum” 😂

I always welcome one-off type episodes in a sea narrative seasons. It’s refreshing. And I’ve really enjoyed the Bad Batch from the beginning of season 1. Such a curious time in the Star Wars timeline. Definitely eager for more from this era.

Just looking forward to two weeks from now when we’re getting two episodes: “The Clone Conspiracy” and “Truth and Consequences”. Should be bangers

I normally don’t like the filler episodes that deviate from the main plot, but I really enjoyed the suspense of this one. It’s always cool to see an onscreen glimpse of the Star Wars universe before the prequel era.

The Zeffo tomb guardians in the game are very similar to the giant mech beast.

When my brother and I were watching this episode, we were both screaming "It's the Zeffo!!"

I am absolutely SHOCKED, as a huge fan of fallen order, that this episode completely went over my head. I didnt even connect the two until this video. I completely forgot about the zeffo. Really cool detail to add to this series.
