What people fail to understand is, wood was also used as fuel. And even in current tribal areas, when an old wooden house collapsed or abandoned they used wood from it's structure as fuel to make food and what not. On top of that wildfires even then were common and when such fires spread to a village made of old dry wooden houses. Boom.
