THE PHILIPPINES VS. CHILD LABOR (Good news + bad news)

I saw a picture on Facebook recently that inspired me to make this video. Luckily the Philippines is doing something to stop child labor with the Batas Kasambahay Act that was passed in 2013.

Lot of work still to be done, but I believe that as the Philippines continues to improve as a country, less and less instances of child labor will be present. I'm hopeful for the future. Thank you for watching.

As a Filipino, this I agree to. I see this so often.

It’s difficult to live in certain poverty areas, especially Manila, where desperation drives people to do whatever they can to feed their family.
Arnel, the lead singer of journey is a great testimony of growing up like this.
As Americans, we see this is horrifying, but look at how responsible, hard-working and dedicated these children grow up to be so that their own children don’t have to live the way they did.

Good work Tom! It is unfortunate to have kids in that situation. The root of the problem runs deep and branches out to different things. We can only do our part that for a brief moment we can impart some joy and respite from these kids lives.

Yeah i remember seeing kids my age or even younger back then doing work just to survive, i was the lucky one but i felt like i didn't deserve it.
The most notable memories i have is kids collecting garbage/recyclables and kids selling flowers and other stuff.

This type of things are pretty common and its roots are deep embedded in the culture to the point that we have a metaphor for it "maagang nagbanat ng buto" or in literal English translation is "stretching his/her bones early or at young age".

It is sad but as a Filipino adult, I hope we can build a better country for the children of tomorrow so they won't undergo this hardship anymore. Peace!

You have a great point tom. I guess every poor people did the same thing during childhood but this has to be addressed because it was totally wrong it should never be a norm.

Me and my siblings experienced this growing up by helping our parents in selling food products, but unlike less fortunate kids, we only do this after school and still have time to play (we live in NCR where school is only for half a day).

I agree that children should not be forced to earn a living and just enjoy their childhood, although on a positive note, I am glad that my parents taught us the value of hardwork at a young age and other life skills and lessons that allowed us to prosper and really enjoy life now that we are adults and have our own families.

At the age of 7/8 yrs. old, I clean our neighbor's house and I also do a car wash to get an allowance for my studies. At the age of 15, I'm already paying taxes officially as a Service Crew in one of the fast-food chains here in PH. Life is though here in PH, but somehow those experiences molded me to become who I am today and I'm still grateful for everything. I'm happy that we already have Batas Kasambahay Act, so that parents need to be more responsible.
