That was so inspirational. I cried just imagining the pain he felt on his heart in that moment.

Still to this day one of the best displays of the Olympic spirit.

It makes me so happy to see a father that would help his son even if he didn’t win, when there are so many parents that wouldn’t have done that.

This was more about being a real FATHER, than running in the Olympics.

I watched this live. It was... amazing. One day his dad will pass away but in the most important time in his life he was there. As my father has been for me... many, many times.
Go dad's!

May 6th, 2017 I was running my high schools final home meet. I was a 400m sprinter who also ran the 200m. I knew my hamstring was sore but I had a heavy load that season. I was ranked 6th in Maryland 2A for the 400m so the 200m was easy. I had my best start ever and was running against my relay partner Bryce for the first place finish. Around the bend, I felt the pop. You think you got shot when it happens. Every year our coach showed us the original footage of this race. I got up off the track and hopped my way to the finish line. Three hours ago I was introduced as a state contender to a roaring home crowd. I finished the night laying on the track yelling “it’s torn it’s torn it’s torn.” I watch this video every year to remind myself to finish strong.

I love how they had to technically record him as “did not finish race”. is the purest definition of finishing the race.

This would have gone "viral" if it happened today.

Amazing moment. I was actually sitting about four rows away from his dad on the turn to the homestretch at the stadium that day. When we saw dad heading down the isle, climbing over the rail and onto the track we knew right away this moment would go down in history as a true meaning of the Olympic Games.

Every single time this pops up as a video to watch especially because it’s almost time for the next Olympics I cry. When you see athletes going back to help someone I’m a goner. It gives me chills to see athletes like this man and others trying so hard. When his dad pushes his way to his water works start.

This account will never grow old; what a beautiful man with a wonderful legacy. Where is Derek today, 2020? He is the true spirit of the Olympics and to think--he crossed the finish line with the help of his Father! Exactly what Christians are to do, from faith to faith!

Hold up, we just gonna gloss over the fact his sister went into labor by watching this?

I watched it live back in 92 and bust into tears when this happened. It was and is the most beautiful Olympic moment I have seen.

I never cry, even at funerals of loved ones, but watching him finish that race despite the extreme agony had me balling my eyes out like a baby. What a powerful and inspirational ending

A true father right there. Keeping a promise to his son to always be there for him no matter what.
