I think earthbenders can either learn metal or lava but never both. Its like in their genetics what of them they can learn or none of them.

Ok wow alot of people didn't know toph can lavabend shes the one who rediscovered it (comics guys). Also having different bending parents has nothing to do and your abilities to use sub bending.
