Finite element analysis and physical pressure testing of a submerged Lumeneye subsea line laser

In this short videoclip, we demonstrate the pressure handling capabilities of the Lumeneye subsea laser using finite element analysis.

Once we have achieved a high enough safety factor on the housing design, which was modeled using mechanical properties directly taken for stainless steel 316 grade from our ISO9002-certified suppliers, we begin with a batch of initial housings which we then send off for independent mechanical verification in a pressurised test facility in Dyce, Aberdeen.

We put some photographs of our testing trials on our facebook blog at

In this video clip, we show what happens mechanically to both the subsea housing and a novel optical material which we use for our subsea laser window.  The housing is exposed to a pressure equivalent to 9000m of seawater at a temperature of 2 degrees.
