I think the guy imitating Andy at the beginning was Freddie Prinze.

Growing up in the early 1970’s, when Andy started being on TV, I was so crazy about him. I was lucky enough to see him wrestle women at the Playboy Casino in Atlantic City, N.J. in April 1981; the show was filmed by the Playboy Channel at the time but to this day I have never discovered it to be available to view. Right where I was sitting, at one point a waitress carrying a tray of drinks got into a shouting match with Andy outside the Ring when he pushed her and the tray of drinks went flying, getting me and some others around me wet! It was one of the greatest shows ever in my 66 years now! R. I. P., you Genius, Andy…

This is a routine that little Andy Kaufman must have performed in his bedroom at home with his record player. I love it.

Brilliance. There will never be another like Andy Kaufman.

Freddie Prinze was very funny, too!

I remember Andy being on SNL but somehow missed all of these Dick van Dyke shows, probably because it was a summer replacement show and I was at camp for the summer. Didn't know about the appearances until now - thank you for this!

It's Dec. 12th, 2024. Dick Van Dyke will be 99 tomorrow.

Andy Kaufman was ahead of his time. He was first to do his kind of humour and the last and only since no one could do it ever more because they would just be copying him. And to top it all he had a beautiful voice and his impersonations of Elvis Presley were the best. He was one in a billion. So sad that he died too young at 35.

Thanks for posting these. This show from Dick van Dyke didnt last long as I recall, but to me, it was one of the best variety shows ever, right up there with Carol Burnett and the Smother Brothers.

"The spinner's weasel is a mechanical yarn-measuring device consisting of a spoked wheel with gears attached to a pointer on a marked face (which resembles a clock) and an internal mechanism that makes a "pop" sound after the desired length of yarn is measured"- Wiki.. In modern usage the "weasel pops" when cooked for too long in the microwave oven

This was such an excellent show, but it didn't get ratings and lasted only 2 months. It won an Emmy for Outstanding Show after it was already off the air. And I believe it was the show that introduced Andy Kaufman.

I heard Zmuda once say that Andy's career started by him being hiring to play music at a kid's birthday party and he incorporated stuff like this routine and his SNL "Mighty Mouse" appearance from doing this kid's parties. Little kids loved it and adults, as you can imagine, had a wide cariety of reactions.

At first I’m thinking he’s just trying to reproduce the Mighty Mouse skit, then slow.y you forget the joke is he’s lip syncing to a childrens song, then you believe he’s singing, then you believe there’s a little girl beside him and they are talking to each other. And at the pause in the song you’re reminded this is a gag, and not an actual duet, and then the song kicks back in for an extra bonus gag. It’s wholesome and, not throwing the word around lightly, genius

I also never knew about him being on this show! I guess I was busy with other things. Glad to be catching up now.
