Synopsis: When a prostitute is found dead in a Los Angeles skyscraper occupied by a large Japanese corporation, detectives John Conner (Sean Connery) and Web Smith (Wesley Snipes) are called in to investigate. Although Conner has previous experience working in Japan, cultural differences make their progress difficult until a security disc showing the murder turns up. Close scrutiny proves the disc has been doctored, and the detectives realize they're dealing with a cover-up as well.

I remember this - based on a book all about the Japanese taking over the US economically, released about the same time the bubble burst, making this look very stupid in hindsight.

The actual Japanese found this to be hilarious, of course.

Arguably the worst adaptation of a superb book, ever made. I was crushingly disappointed when I saw this on the big screen.

I'm currently going through a bunch of older crime thrillers emphasizing East/West culture clashes with American police officers/detectives pursuing Asian villains. So far, Rising Sun is the worst.

This film is just dull, convoluted, and anticlimactic with some plot threads and relationships left unresolved. While the performances are solid, Connery and Snipes's characters are one-note. Connery's character is the old sage who is right about everything and Snipes's character is young and angry; that's all there is to them.

Its attitude towards Japanese industry is both laughable and worrying. The tagline for this film might as well have been, "Reject Japanese Industry. USA All The Way!"

I've also gone through Black Rain and Showdown in Little Tokyo already, so I'm on to The Yakuza (1974) and Year of the Dragon (1985).
