I'm retired now so I don't need a super laptop but I'm used to a 2013 17" laptop. So for me, I am impressed with the 16" MacBook Pro with the M2 Pro chip. Yes, I don't need all that power but I like a large screen and this laptop has amazing features. I don't move my laptop much anymore but I like the fact that you can unplug the MacBook and it will run at full speed without dimming the screen! I can't do that with my current computer. When the battery was still good, the screen would dim if it was unplugged! I keep it plugged in all the time and the fan kicks on at times and can get pretty loud. I would love the quiet MacBook! While my old laptop still works I'll keep using it because it has an i7 with 16 GB RAM and 500 GB SSD. It is fast and powerful for a nearly 10 year old machine!

Bonus tip: when getting a Mac, buy more RAM than you might otherwise for three reasons. First, you can't upgrade them so the purchase becomes a big mistake if you buy too little RAM. Second, your memory needs are likely to increase over time. Third, when reselling it years later, you have a bigger group of people interested in buying it.

I have been a developer for >40 years. I tell everyone 1) what software do you need, 2) get a machine good for that software. I totally agree programmers should spend more time thinking than coding. The only bottleneck modern computers run into is for test driven development. My test suite currently takes 15min on an M1 Max. I got the m1 to run tests faster. If only apple ran unit tests in Mac Catalyst in parallel it might be 5 minutes, or I could justify the ultra for 2x the cores. I got the max over the pro for games and the 64GB of ram with the higher ram speed. But, the 13” m1 I had before did work just as well, but I wanted the larger screen.

Such a good advice, specially for the miryad of us developers who don't need so much power on a laptop.
Even I do develop HUGE enterprise software, most of us are ok with 32 or even 16gb RAM, and an Intel gen 10+. Its important to have a fast SSD to have a good responsiveness, great external keyboard and mouse.
