Thinking of homeschooling and came here as a starting point. I actually attended Pensacola Christian Academy for a few years in Elementary school back in the 80s (I still remember some of my kindegarten songs). My mom couldn't afford tuition there, so I left to attend another Christian school. Nothing compared. PCA laid the foundation for the rest of my school years. I now have a 12 year old, and something inside me is nudging me toward homeschooling. Thank you for the comparison. I will check out the other recommendation as well.

When I was in Jr. High I was heavily bullied and even got death threats from other students, so my mom used A Beka to home school me. I went on to do really well in my college classes for the most part.

I will say that it lacks in two main areas. One, if the parents don't understand a subject or aren't great at teaching it, then it's not easy to learn. My dad was trying to teach me algebra and he didn't know how to teach it. He thought if he understood it then if I told him I didn't then I must be "Talking back" and he'd get angry with me. I couldn't really learn it in that environment because he didn't know how to teach something that he understood but I didn't yet.

I was good at reading though and every other subject was a breeze because I was good at reading and memorizing and writing. I had to learn math in college remedial classes where I was able to pick it up in a less toxic environment.

The second area it lacks is in science. One of my special interests was science and unfortunately A Beka books at least at the time seemed to teach young earth creationism, which has about as much in common with science as flat earthism does. I'm certainly a Christian but as an adult I had to learn and re-learn a lot of things that I was taught very wrongly. They would teach things that were just flat out wrong like about how index fossils were supposedly circular reasoning when in reality they are not. They would teach there are no transitional fossils when in reality there are transitional fossils for just about every major transition you can think of, like synapsids being a bridge between earlier amniotes and mammals for example. They would just deny these fossils even existed.

I was also in one of my classes supposed to read some book about the four seasons of colors and how to use makeup and do other feminine things like meal planning which I didn't really use as an adult much. Makeup always made my face itchy so I haven't worn it very often, and I was never interested in dating or getting married so a lot of that stuff was pretty irrelevant to my adult life.

I will say that a lot of the basics were taught well though as far as a lot of history, math, basic science (surprisingly they even taught methodological naturalism even if they disagreed with it in principle). One of my favorite parts of the high school biology class was that they had a tree field guide and my dad and I went out to find different trees and identify what they were based on the book and I was supposed to take leaves from a certain number of trees and press them and take photos to send it.

For home ec we were supposed to cook a meal with a protein, starch, and vegetable and dessert and send in pictures of it with people sitting at the table, etc. We didn't really have a lot of neighbors we were close enough with so we didn't have the number of guests they were looking for so we just took pictures of our family sitting there. That was kind of fun honestly.

I also really benefitted from doing an accounting course through them and I learned to type through A Beka which serves me very well today.

It was obviously better than being bullied in school and it gave me a chance to breathe and recover somewhat, and it was nice in a way because I could do most of it on my own without my parents helping me, and get ahead/read ahead, as much as I wanted to in order to not even have to do school every day.

So while it definitely had its problems, as far as pushing the ridiculous YECism and being a little bit too tradcon for my tastes (i'm conservative Christian still but more moderate than what A Beka pushes), I feel like it's not all bad and I was prepared enough to go to college after doing the program.
