I worked for a gas utility in Massachusetts for 2 decades. In the late 80s i was on a street crew. During the summer months backhoes were usually overhauled and we had 3 crews and 3 backhoes. If your backhoe was out of service we would go out in the heat and with a shovel and digging bar. Get on site jack hammer then dig by hand until another crew could send there hoe to us. Usually that was just to get spoil. I loved it

I'll be honest in the 80s we weren't always doing the correct thing with tracing wire. When i became district inspector i relized how dum that was. That was the markout job
