I’m a bit confused, are those measurements to spec?

Looks like the holes don’t go deep enough or are wide enough

I'm working on this project, do u think using one nail instead wud b ok? I jus don't like the look of the nails showing although Ill b painting it. The nails i have r 9x3-1/4. R these too big and shud a do smaller ones?
