How Technology Is Changing Farming

There are many ways that technology is changing farms both big and small. While the hippy in me is all about low tech farming techniques I cannot help but take advantage of what out tech advancements have to offer.

I have used a drone to help me manage my land, I use wifi enabled temperature sensors to keep an eye on my baby chick brooder, and I use a lot of tech when it comes to my record keeping and marketing.

Everything has its' place in the world. It is up to you to determine how much tech you do or do not want to use on your farm. There are free tools out there to make you a better farmer. My final words here would be to tell you to keep an open mind and figure out where some piece of technology can help you be a more successful farmer.

Here in North Dakota I work with many small farms.  We are encouraging them to use Veggie Compass and Google Docs to track labor, expenses, etc.  We are just beginning to look into AgSquared, although in my opinion AgSquared is a little expensive for the new or beginning small farmer - but it does assist a producer/farmer in keeping excellent records.

My 'cloud' is a notebook on the kitchen table. I just have to make sure my hands aren't wet when making entries. I thought your observations on fiberglass yard tools a useful new technology. For me the new technologies are things like swales, berms, raised beds, using compost to heat my greenhouses in winter... assisting and allowing nature to work more effectively. Electric fencing is a 'wow' technology.

January 1, 2016 I started using a spreadsheet on my iPhone to track my egg production and also my rabbit breeding program.

Has down more efficient tools and techniques. Especially with the drought in California, the drip irrigation is becoming a more commonly used with farmers and homeowners with gardens. Something that's also pretty cool are the new vertical gardens that people are making in old buildings.
