I couldn't breathe when they gave me it!!! Felt like I was suffocating it was so close on my face. She was trying to get me to take deep breaths but I could barely get any. Fell asleep pretty fast tho

Gagging? I was just suffocating. The pressure was turned up so high I couldn't breathe out. I tried to tell them but they ignored me. By far the most traumatic surgical memory I have, felt like I was dying.

I've had 11 surgeries. I would have done so much better if you had been my anesthesiologist. You are very informative and quite caring. I wish more doctors had your attitude. 💯

This guy is too nice.
When I say “too nice” I mean, just the right amount.

Good idea! I always tell my anesthesiologist, I don’t won’t the mask because I don’t like the way it feels, I ask for the I.V. I really enjoy donating to the anesthesiologist Foundation, since it was hard for me to go to college because of my cerebral palsy! I really wanted to be a anesthesiologist

when i woke up from my surgery to widen my upper jaw/removal of my wisdom teeth i remember waking up multiple times and sitting up straight then being told to lay back down I'm kinda surprised i still remember that since I was half asleep while doing that

Never gagged. I love anesthesia and ask to not know I was there. Also tell anesthesiologists that they are my favorite 😊 (I don’t ask for pain meds so not a druggie just don’t want to wake up during surgery)

I’ve had over 100 surgeries. Mostly before I was 15. Even when I was little I got to hold my mask. Lessons the feeling of closed in & not having control.

They asked me if I was ready when they went to put me under anesthesia and I said wait let me grab my plushie and they pinned me to the table and shoved the mask onto my face and then gaslit me into thinking I had been uncooperative even though I remember perfectly well that I wasn’t. I was six. Happened another time when I was 10.

Thanks! I agree this is the best way for most patients.

I have claustrophobia and that mask freaks me out! Thanks for this tip!

I had to be put under general anesthesia for an emergency c section when I was 17. Had a bit of claustrophobia with the mask and since my arms were strapped down to the table I kept scrunching my nose until the mask ended up in my forehead
My anesthesiologist turned around and was like how did that get there? Here you need this and put it back over my nose and mouth 🤣

I don't remember a gag reflex. I remember panic as someone else was controlling the mask. I was frightened in a similar way as a kiddo. I don't like anyone else controlling my breathing.

This should be advised to doctors o let patient control the mask. Practical advice 👍

Doctor, when the anesthesiologist puts the mask on your face is that gas already on and is that what causes you to go unconscious? I'm curious what I was breathing in during the start of my many surgeries. I have a very strong gag reflex but, it didn't trigger that but, it was pressed hard on my face and I felt like I had to struggle to exhale. If I had held it to my own face I wouldn't have pressed down as hard and I wonder if I still would have gone out? Was becoming an anesthesiologist your first choice? You ever think of becoming a different type of doctor first? I became friends with my surgeon and she said the anesthesiologists were always the cool kids. 😅

Just laying flat on my back makes me cough like no tomorrow, Post Nasal Drip is a literal Pain in the Neck. I’ve coughed so hard that my jaw goes out of joint on one side so it’s very painful when that happens but I’ve gotten a technic down that works for me so it’s not nearly as bad as it used to be.

Well I don’t gotta worry about gagging as I have no gag reflex which I found out about when I actually needed to make myself throw up to prevent irreversible damage from a medication 😅 however I do have to take my asthma medicine prior to anesthesia ig to I breathe better because I have asthma from a doctor fucking up when I was a baby

The doctor didn’t suction out my lungs when I was born (like at all) until I turned purple at two weeks old.. he then tried playing it off as normal 😂 my mom was actively a CNA and knew that was absolute bs + I’m the youngest sibling

I also take control of thermometers, as nurses usually push them too far back
