A Matter of Husbands | Class 12 English Summary in Nepali | By Ferenc Molnar | Explanation – Gurubaa

This is the new video while covering the syllabus of Class 12 Compulsory English where we have provided the summary of one act play titled ‘A Matter of Husbands’. It was written by Hungarian-born author/ poet/ dramatist Ferenc Molnar (12 January 1878 – 1 April 1952). The author is also mentioned as most celebrated and controversial playwright of the country. He is regarded as one of the most versatile artist whose style was uniquely his own from the country.

The summary notes of the one act play is given below:
As a twisted one act play, ‘A Matter of Husbands’ sheds light on the prime functions of actors which should be making the audience believe in illusion. It presents the story of a wife whose husband (lawyer) having an affair with an actress known for her glamour. The wife comes to the actress and demands to get her husband back. The actress being in speechless bewilderment could only stare her. The wife explains that her husband is not so handsome and is just a lawyer of her manager and his name is Alfred. The actress admits that she has met her husband once or twice while having a contract sign and she has nothing extra involvement with him. The actress also denies that she is not having the flowers that her husband has been sending.

The Earnest Woman (wife) blames the actress for persuading her husband with her glamour, make-up, attractive dresses, beautiful lines written by other author and bright light of the stage. The actress claimed that she has not been the part of cheating by her husband and hasn’t received flower or a letter or a gift from her husband Alred (lawyer).

The actress convinces the wife that male grab attention and love of a woman by making them jealous. Her husband was also trying to make her jealous just by pretending to send flowers and gifts to others. People involved in lawyering, composer, authors, orchestra leaders and managers need to create a fake love affair with an actress to regain their wife/ sweetheart’s love and affection. The wife becomes totally convinced and believe in the lie of the actress. The wife rushes out being happy and turn as the admirer of the actress. When she left, the actress calls Alfred who was hiding in her boudoir.

Earnest young woman doubted that her husband (Alfred) and famous actress (Sara) are in affair so to make sure you g woman visits the room of famous actress and impatiently waits for her. The play starts after the entry of Sara. Though Alfred doesn't have any role in the play, the play is being played around him. As soon as Sara enters the drawing room, you g woman rushes towards her and angrily asks her to return her husband but Sara denies that she has stolen her husband . She says she only know him professionally. Earnest woman tells her that

The play starts in the drawing room of the actress where the young woman has come suspecting that his husband is having an affair with the actress.

The young woman claims that the actress receives flowers and letters from his husband every week. However, the actress denies it and claims that she knows Alfred only professionally.

She also claims that it is common for husbands to do this to make their wives jealous. She says that this happens all the time with her.

The innocent young woman leaves the place thanking her because she cleared her "doubts".
After she leaves, the actress asks Alfred to come out of the closet.
