Õhtu Ilu - Pärt Uusberg

This beautiful song is a folksong, or rather a combination of three folksongs, in an Estonian poetic style called regilaul. The lyrics of old Estonian folksongs were written down more than a hundred years ago, but in most cases the music was not, so modern singers or choirs often sing the old words to their own new melodies. Pärt Uusberg’s version of this song is excellent, both peaceful and powerful, which is fitting for the title: Õhtu Ilu (“Evening Beauty” or “The Beauty of Evening”). A partial translation of the Estonian lyrics is: “Who hides the sun from us, who steals the moonlight? God hides the sun from us, the Creator steals the moonlight. Let the blessed morning come, let the sun rise over the forest.”

Composer - Pärt Uusberg
Choir - Youth choir BALSIS
Soloists - Laura Elizabete Godiņa, Alberta Paulīna Godiņa
Artistic Director - Ints Teterovskis

I first heard this at the 2017 Childrens' Song Festival in Tallinn. It has haunted me since. Unfortunately all too often, original pieces in native tounges, are only best when sung by those who sing in that language. But this...totally unexpected! Yet maybe predictable? Afterall, they are singing about the sun and moon over Kuramaa, a geographical bind which unites Estonia and Lativa. Kuramaa. Kurzeme. Kurāmō. Very well done.

The most beautiful haunting song and melody I have ever heard. It must give extreme happiness to the singers. Brings a lump toy throat and a tear to my eyes.

I'm french, and first heard this in the movie "Crosswind".
I love movies, and I think I had... never seen a movie like this.

Such a dramatic and poignant story, told from a very unconventional way, like the vivid portrait of this tragedy.
Since then, this wonderful melancholic song, in the end of the movie, doesn't stop to haunt me...
Thank you very much for this precious sharing.
Greetings from France

Pärt Uusberg is definitey one of the contemporary Estonian composers with a very unique sense of harmony. His songs are always a pleasure to sing and to listen to. He will be the next Veljo Tormis and Arvo Pärt of the Estonian choral tradition!
