Causative Verbs: Have and Get | Have Something Done/ Get Something Done
In this lesson, we learn the grammar structures, 'have something done' and 'get something done'. We go over examples and practice using them.
We can use causative verbs to convey the idea that someone is causing someone else to perform an action for him or her.
In the grammar structure introduced in this lesson. we use these two causative verbs to talk about paying someone else for a particular service—usually a professional.
The grammar structure used is: have something done or subject + have + object + past participle.
Here are some examples
I clean my house— I have my house cleaned (I pay someone else to clean my house)
I edit my videos— I have my videos edited (I pay someone else to edit my videos)
I dry clean my clothes— I have my clothes dry cleaned (I pay someone else to dry clean my clothes)
I wash my car— I have my car washed (I pay someone else to wash my car)
We can also express this same idea using the verb ‘get’ instead of ‘have’. Although using ‘get’, is less formal.
I have my car washed.— I get my car washed.
She has her videos edited.— She gets her videos edited.
They have their groceries picked up.— They get their groceries picked up.
