Close Guantanamo!

This event took place between 9am and 12pm on Thursday 28 September, 2023, in the Manolis Glezos room in the European Parliament's Spinelli building in Brussels.

The most significant gathering ever assembled on Guantanamo in the European Parliament, the event saw speakerspresent first hand testimony about the horrors of the camp and the nightmare that continues for the 16 men who have been approved for release, never convicted of anything, but who have nowhere to go.

The event, hosted by Clare Daly & Mick Wallace, is yet a plea for the closure of the detention camp and how the EU and its Member States can assist in finding viable solutions for the relocation of the remaining prisoners to third countries, and the guarantee of decent living conditions for former prisoners wrongfully detained by the US administration for years and then resettled.

Speakers:

• Mansoor Adayfi, Guantanamo former prisoner
• Moazzam Begg, Guantanamo former prisoner
• Lakhdar Boumediene, Guantanamo former prisoner
• Fionnuala Ní Aoláin, UN Special Rapporteur on the Promotion and Protection of Human Rights and Fundamental Freedoms while Countering Terrorism
• Beth Jacob, Human Rights Attorney
• Alka Pradhan, US Military Commissions Defence Organization
• Andy Worthington, Journalist & Activist
• Valerie Lucznikowska, September Eleventh Families for Peaceful Tomorrows
• James Yee, Guantanamo's former Muslim Chaplain

Chairs
• Clare Daly, Member of the European Parliament
• Mick Wallace, Member of the European Parliament

Why does it seem that only people in the EU Parliament are more concerned about closing Guantanamo than the US government? If the US is a government by the people, the people must at least be heard, and what they say put into action. Do they have to be shown by a foreign parliament how to conduct business which maintains democracy?

My own experience in the US DOC (prison for profit) is quite disturbing and yet continues? The US has 4% of the world population and we hold 25% of the worlds prisoners? Reagan's deregulation in the 80's opened the gates. Most people will not believe the labeling, and subsequent treatment of citizens- prisoners in this country😐✌️ I welcome all international support for the cessation of the insanity in the name of freedom and democracy ❣️
