I remember a college professor explaining how the architecture could also reflect the people's relationship with God at the time. Gothic cathedrals are built tall to get people in the habit of looking up with a sense of awe. There are some octagonal churches where the echoes bounce off the walls to remind you that God is all around you, and so on. So even the buildings themselves can reinforce a message.
