Tip for levelling the frame. Screw two batons across the ladder frame hang in the joist hole you created and shim as necessary. Makes it a one person job.

Another option for anyone else looking at doing this, you can get extending ladder kits that slide up on a pivot into the loft, meaning you can keep the existing smaller hatch size. Saves cutting the joists, fitting a frame etc.

That looks like a truss roof in which case the joists would be structural. Did you do structural calculations first and get building control?

Joists??. In north west england these are called roof trusses. Joists are groundfloor ceiling/ 1st floor floor.

It appears you have roof trusses. you should consult a structural engineer before cutting. The joists, as you call them, are to prevent your roof from spreading and collapsing. Hope you're not planning on moving any time soon

Please insure you state that you MUST seek professional advice when cutting any joist. Good effort for the work but remember some dudes will watch this having no clue, think they can do it better, start hacking away and collapse their roof.
