I stole this idea from the new Ford Maverick, kudos to whoever came up with it. This is a Tacoma, but I assume this same idea can work on any truck bed.

I used two 2x4's for each slotted area. Then made a little stool that sets on the tailgate for support when I haul plywood. Works like a charm.

I was concerned that my tailgate might fall off from a harsh bump as this is the hinge release angle for tailgate. I might be paranoid but I think one should add a hose clamp around the right hinge so it doesn't slip off, it also has the benefit of making it harder for someone to steal your tailgate.

That's clever. I was thinking to use a motorcycle strap between the gate latches, but now maybe a carabiner to attach the gate cables.

With chevy trucks, you can loop the tailgate cables around the post on the tailgate so you don't need to move where the cable is connected.

They used to use chains for tailgate stays which could be shortened one link at a time. My Dad used to haul lumber this way in his Datsun mini truck. Even full size trucks have perches for cross bed boards.

I agree with you. Something so simple that makes so many people’s lives so much easier why don’t all manufacturers do this from the factory. The first generation Colorado canyon twins had this as well.

Great hack, but you also can put a 3rd board on the tailgate and level it with others. The tailgate already so heavy, may stressout the cable or the bolt attached to the new holes you drilled in.

My 2004 Dakota had bump outs to allow 2 2x4s for the same purpose.

It really is strange - for years we had a 2000 Toyota sienna minivan that could fit full sheets of 4x8 drywall or even a refrigerator with the tailgate closed (and rear seats removed). 24 years later trucks are still being made that can’t “truck” building supplies around.

Would be great to see plywood in the truck but thanks for the video

My 2011 Dakota can do that and you don't even need to detach the tailgate cables, there's a stopper that you set the cables on.

where is the normal spot the wire support grabs onto ? Don't see it ? Also, another hack is, like new colorado, to weld or screw a round thing on the side of the tailgate so the wire thing can go around it at mid height position, well, you'd place it where it would be the right position. If factory wire is not strong enough, I assume we can find a tad thicker stronger one to replace it with.. But yah, what the Heck Toyota ? I think the 24 has this covered ?

Honda Ridgeline can carry 4x8 sheets in it's bed.

Oh man, all those chipped corners and extra patch I didn’t have to use

I think the old Ford Explorer Sport Trak could do that too. Not positive though but i heard about something similar.

The weight will push the sides and damage your truck body, just support it from underneath.

Can you easily move the support cables to the original bolts, like you can with the Maverick? Or do you have to undo the bolt to move it?
