The narrative I was thought was that Bin laden was a regular fighter against the Soviets during the war. He later inherited a large sum of money. After the Soviets gave up and left the US also packed up and left. The Afghans ask for assistance to rebuild the war torn Afghanistan but got no assistance from the US. This pissed them off and they then became hostile towards the US.
