NYC’s nationally low—and historically declining—rates of gun violence are in many respects the envy of the nation. The stubborn fact remains, however, that some 300 people will lose their lives to gun violence in the city’s approximately 1,200 shooting incidents this year. The practitioners, policy professionals, and researchers featured discuss the efforts that have transformed NYC into a national success story—and the need for further work to continue reducing the ongoing harms associated with stubborn gun violence. Panels explore both the successes derived from the traditions and techniques of law enforcement, and the more recent introduction of public health perspectives to understanding the causes of deadly violence—and how to prevent it.
