Demo of local network wireless (LAN) working on Minecraft Bedrock v1.13.0 using two physical copies. This is a local ad-hoc connection between the two units. Both users have their own copy of the game and are are already “friends”on Nintendo's network. In local mode the host starts the game and a friend can see it and join. Lots of posts online saying this doesn’t work but it seems to be working fine. (See pinned comment for updated details).

Let me clarify for anyone who is confused if this isn’t working. You MUST be connected to a local network in order to play with your friends Via switch. Even if that local network does not have a wireless connection you BOTH need to be connected to the same network. After you are both connected, and you are both friends on the switch with each other then and only then will you be able to see each other’s world on your friends in Minecraft. Honestly it’s ridiculous Nintendo can’t have a simple local play via Bluetooth in 2022. We have to jump around a thousand hoops. I remember when I was a kid we were using Pictochat on the DS in separate rooms of the house. So what happened Nintendo, why are we backtracking and why is it so hard to make the switch Bluetooth compatible to other switch devices. I hope this helps anyone in the comments who is confused.

This still works! Oddly enough...on one switch it says press x for those options. They are both updated but the ui is different. Anyways, thanks a lot!

excuse me, but I have seen people do lan servers with switch without having to switch to strictly local play. Since local play, in a way 'turns off' the microsoft account, is that step really necessary?

I can't get it to work most days, but sometimes it does. I am doing all of the steps, but it just won't connect most days. My kids are getting frustrated.

Is there a way to do it cross-platform locally or connected the same internet. And not have a Nintendo Switch Online subscription?
I'm thinking not but could there be a way?

This really saved me once I realized you needed to be "friends"....wish I had seen that earlier. Ok, so a few points I also learned - 1. In order to be "friends" each user needs to have their own separate free nintendo account using a separate email. When I tried to connect two different profiles under the same nintendo account(same email), it would not permit that action. I did also try to add family members/users to the account but it started asking me for a credit card, so I have to assume that a family membership is not free?
A few questions, once you are "friends" and you start playing, then one person decides to leave the world, does it disconnect for all users?
Also, if the connection gets disrupted and close out of the game and devices separate from each other for a short period, but then come back together, do you need to search for the friend again on the local network before you can start playing and select LAN play in minecraft?
Just trying to get all the steps!! :) THank you!!
