This may sounds silly or stupid but here it goes. As someone that is in poor physical health and doesn't live in an area where any gems or gold is formed I enjoy watching your videos because it gives me the chance to see what it's like. I get to learn things I otherwise wouldn't have a chance to. Your videos in a way help me live the dreams I won't have a chance to.

Lucky Dip

My son Lachlan Steward is a part-time cleaner for aged care in Cobram Vic.
He saved up and bought some panning equipment and watched you for wisdom when he can. I bought him a metal detector, and he goes out when he can. He never finds much, but he enjoys it (mostly cans, rip lids, some coins, but alas no gold yet). He has autism, and so has only one mate who is a gamer. I am going to buy him a ute in June when I get my tax back. So he can travel. You are a real inspiration to him, through your honesty about your mental health struggles. Co morbidity for him are anxiety depression and tourette. So he can be a mixed bag sometimes. Those who know him love his brutal honesty and his kindness. Please consider him for your lucky dip as it would really spur him on.

Chris, videos like this are why your channel is so enjoyable. You change things up by diversifying from just gold hunting to include DIY projects, crystal hunting and other out-of-the-box type stuff to keep things interesting.

That amethyst at the 11min mark was gorgeous! What fun!

That red clay towards the end and also peanutbutter colored clay are indicators of pocket clay in my area and a bunch of others. That in the intersection of two veins, It looked like you were on to a proper pocket there. I think the color may be a byproduct of the minerals that didn't drop out of solution during the cooling after hydrothermal action, and those may be common to many quartz bearing areas. Spot on too about the area. Amethyst isn't crazy expensive like it was ages ago, but serious collectors will go after rarer localities, and there isn't a huge amount from Oz on the market, the recent find in Western Australia notwithstanding. I've got some neat ones from Scotland and Ireland which are similarly uncommon and always love finding pieces from weird areas.

Hey Chris, when you find the quartz matrix vein realize that the crystals grow on the surface of that, so maybe go a few inches higher and use your pick to dig back into the bank to give you some "relief space" to work with and then use your stick to rather gently move some dirt to find points. If you find points you might want to stop and expose an area of the tips and break out a rock with points growing on it. Leave the dirt between the points and soak that dirt out at home to expose the plate of points. You will find a lot of already broken loose points from ground movement but some may still be attached to the matrix. That hard dry clay in between the points will break them if you chip it out dry like you are doing. That is why you are mostly finding pieces. In the tailings you are finding what the prior miners broke but when you find the growth plate you are breaking them.

I hope you continue this journey. I would love to see you pull some nice purple ones out! This might sound dumb, but...like with gold, can you figure out the direction of that quartz vein and maybe go over the next hill and try and locate it where nobody has disturbed anything?

i love a bit of amethyst myself, the differents shades of purple you can get is stunning, i prefer it raw/natural than polished up

Chris, The Herkimer Diamond mines are in New York, a couple hours east of my home! Looks like you are having a great adventure finding these "gems". My daughter and I are hoping to go check out the mines this summer. Love your channel!!! Rusty

You need yourself some gardening tools to go after crystals without damaging them. Pokers and handheld 3-prong rakes.. stuff like that. 😉👍

Alternatives to wood are antler picks, they work great and don't damage the crystals too much.

30 seconds in and you had me laughing at the dousing in bug spray you gave yourself. Great video, as always. May you continue as long as you wish!

Gem hunting definitely looks like fun.
You really did some great research and testing on gold.
Love to see you do the same thing with gems.
It's definitely an underserved topic on Youtube.
