There's a way to play lower notes as sub harmonics. Just play the note you want and a fifth above in the low E string. He probably played the D on 10th fret on E string and the fifth (A at 12th fret 3rd string). And you have to play it using the "face" of your finger, not using the tip of the finger. That technique creates a sub harmonic sound! It's not hard to do it!
