---------------------
Script:
NASA has launched its first ever mission to “touch” the sun.
Parker Solar Probe will fly within 4 million miles of the sun's surface, facing heat and radiation like no spacecraft before it.
To make sure it was ready for the task, NASA sent parts of the probe to ORNL for a close encounter with the lab’s “sun-in-a-box.”
The “sun-in-a-box,” or Plasma-Arc Lamp, can simulate the intense heat and light the space probe will face as it nears the star.
ORNL a shield assembly that protects an instrument measuring ion and electron fluxes as the probe approaches and touches the sun.
An ORNL team exposed the component to conditions that far worse than it is expected to experience in the sun’s atmosphere.
It passed with flying colors – withstanding a simulated solar intensity of 65 watts per square centimeter.
Now for the ultimate test ...
