I've always heard the best time to change the oil is in the spring. After setting all winter, you run the risk of condensation building up due to warming and cooling over the winter. Especially if the mower is stored in an unheated barn, shed, or under a tarp in the yard. Run the mower in the spring until it warms up, dump the oil and all that condensation is gone and you're good to go.

Nice video.

All the newer stuff seems to have done away with the drain plug underneath the engine, so we have to tip the mower as shown.

Some makers advertise never having to change the oil, only add it. Don't buy into that. Change it each season, run ethanol free fuel if you can get it, drain the carb before winter storage if you can't get ethanol free gas, and the average mower will outlive it's owner. My current mower was made in the 90s, still running great.

The only caveat is to never tip a mower carb side down, or the oil will make a mess coming out the vent tube into the airbox. Fortunately the fill tube is generally on the exhaust side for this reason.

Don't forget to remove it while tipped over and give the blade a few swipes with a flat file to sharpen it too! I plan to be stubborn the old skool guy with a gas mower when everyone else has gone electric 😆

Pull the cord a few times with the spark plug disconnected to get the oil dispersed before topping off.

It's also important to either drain out the gas or place the plastic bag underneath the fuel cap

Mmm I think it might be time for a oilchange on my mower too...
I remember i did that in 1996 when I got it from a neighborhood garage sale, but havent done any oilchange since then.
1980`s technology at its finest, only thing i do is sharpen the blade once every few years

Check under the deck for a drain plug if not this method works also but leaves a little more dirty oil behind

I hate it when my push mower starts by itself! It happens at least once a week usually at 3AM, maybe it’s trying to scare the mice out of the shed or it’s been drinking to much gas.

I change the oil in my Ego every time I change the spark plug. 😜

Ran a really old mower for years, it actually had a Drain Plug. Bought a new mower last year, was looking for the drain plug, obviously didn't find one lol. I thought of tipping it on it's side to change it but that seemed Stupid to do lol guess it wasn't so Stupid. Thanks for confirmation 🤟🇨🇦

Notice he's using "high mileage" oil. Small detail but well worth it

Gotta change mine and sharpen blade, I’ve got one of those new Chinese motors runs good but sometimes after I’ve cut half my lawn and shut it off, when I restart it won’t resume high RPM? Think it might be a choke problem, I’ll check the carb and check the set on governor 👍

"Just CHECK AND ADD!"
Love, Briggs and Stratton.
The miracle motor that never contaminates its oil! Just run it till she blows, and dispose of mower properly. Repeat buying cycle.

I pull the cord a few times to circulate the oil a little bit. I bought my mower last year and I have changed it 5 times already. Never hurts .

I would let it sit for another 10-20 Mins after your done, oil will get into the combustion chamber, give it some time to drop back into the oil ban to avoid having a hard start, or a smokey one that will leave deposits, especially now all the engines are overhead valve, depending on where the valves are you mighr also get some seepage there too

All I do is just add that thick oil stabilizer by Lucas in it and just run that for the remainder life of the mower. And I had the same mower for 19 years.

That's exactly how I always do it.

I use a pump siphon and siphon the used oil out. Quicker, less messy.
