This is because the cockpit oxygen masks run off of bottles, where the cabin masks run off of generators. The cabin O2 is designed to keep you alive, the cockpit O2 is designed to keep you awake, alert and aviating.

Fun fact: he gets oxygen from an actual bottle with a large supply. You get oxygen from a chemical reaction of two powders mixed together which hopefully produces enough oxygen to allow you to live until the pilot gets the plane down to an altitude where the air is thuck enough to breath.
