It is pretty damn hard to narrow this list to 5. I first came across his works after hearing about The Age of Reason, but after reading his other works, I was completely fascinated by him. It is amazing how many of his writings are still relevant today.

Just recently read Age of Reason after watching one of your An Atheist Reads videos in which you recommended it. Damn but Paine took no prisoners. I love how the first part is comparatively mild but then, after he caused so much offence with it anyway, the gloves come off in the second part. Amazing stuff.

Great video man. You should make this a series of a sort, 5 things about the founding fathers. If I might suggest the next one: Thomas Jefferson “I hope that we shall crush in its birth the aristocracy of our monied corporations, which dare already to challenge our government to a trial of strength, and bid defiance to the laws of our country.”

I love Thomas Paine, especially The Age of Reason. Thank you, Steve. I love you, too !

Hate to admit it, but I've never read *Common Sense* or *The Age of Reason*. I suppose I've been focused on 20th and 21st century writing (and I've got way too many books I haven't read yet!), but both are on my list.

Thanks for this, Steve!

Paine also suggested intergenerational wealth transfer funded by estate tax.

Even though I am not an American, I like his ideas and attitude towards Government. Really a great personality.

And he was buried in America with only eight people at his funeral
Two years after the founding and signing of our US Constitution, he was warning us about being in debt with England. We need someone brave like pain.

Looking forward to an episode on your favorite founding mother.

Well ... #5 explains why this won't happen. If only women were present at those talks, maybe there would have been universal suffrage.

Wow. What an amazing Founding Father! They never taught me this stuff in school (as I recall). It makes me sick that he's now going to have to share the same American history book as Donald J. Trump, but there have been other villains in American history...and Thomas Paine can shine beyond that!

Thomas Pain was the best ever…. He saw through this Religious insanity and called it out as it still is today…. Shame his words were not US LAW if so dam we would all be better off…

just goes to show that this stuff was universal through time.

To this day, one of the most underrated Founding Fathers, with being one of the best authors of philosophy and political theory in American and elsewhere, had serious street cred, and fought everyone on injustice including the fucking hypocrite Thomas Jefferson.

John Jay and Abigail Adams are also under appreciated founders who fit more of our modern ideals than people like Jefferson and Washington who actively owned slaves.

"How come you weren't never the president?" Intentional double negative?
