It’s hard to define what makes something beautiful, but we seem to know beauty when we see it. Why is that and how does beauty affect our subconscious?

I'm an artist, and my best friend is a nurse who works with geriatric patients. I've often told her I sometimes wish my life's work served humanity as directly as hers does. When i heard the bit about how art in hospital wards makes the patients feel a little better, it reminded me that we are both serving humanity in two, very complementary, ways. Setting the color to your favorite color has a noticeable effect on your mood, and setting it to a really warm color like amber before bed reduces blue light exposure and helps you fall asleep faster.
