I got the Topping DX3 Pro+ around 3 months ago and it surprised me the transparency of its sound. I had it paired with a Rotel (class D) amp and well, it was kind of fatiguing after an hour of continous usage. Something was not ok.
I changed it to a different system where it goes to a NAD preamp (very transparent also) and then to a PrimaLune EVO400 poweramp and, bingo!, the tubes took it to a next level, the whole thing sounds amazing.
I am not a desktop sound/headphone guy so I really do not care for anything else than the DAC.

Everything comes down to personal preference and... affordability. If you like the coloration in sound and also have the money to pay for it, you get the RME or an R2R Dac and you'll be happy. If you like ''neutral'', ''sterile'', ''thin'' or whatever you may call it sound and you are in a tight budget, then you get something like the DX3 Pro+. But you can't deny that DX3 is an excellent dac/amp for the price. And yes, money=quality, but it's not the end of the world if you don't have either of it.

You are comparing two VERY different devices. The RME is for a different audience than the $200 dac/amp crowd. The topping DX3 Pro is great for a general dac/amp.

The RME is meant for a very niche audience who want to sculpt their listening experience down to every frequency, also the device has a dac and amp included.

Comparing the two devices is very unfair to the Topping.

Thanks for pissing on my bonfire, just ordered a DX3 Pro+ due to lack of funds/knowledge. Anyway for me it will still be an upgrade going from the old Ifi Zen Dac (since in the EU there were no decent low end options) which barely offer any improvement to my Sundara's over no amp at all....

I don't like the DX3 Pro+. It sounds thin. No matter if I run it through an amp or not, this doesn't change. Tested with 5 headphones against 3 other dacs. Very limited listening pleasure.
They tuned it to sound very clean, but a side effect is that it doesn't sound natural, rather artificial. I cannot recommend buying it. My "cheapo" Fiio E10k sounds better, smoother, more pleasant.

Utter nonsense. I had these two at the same time for a couple of weeks and the sound difference is almost non-existent.

I have the RME and I love it for all of its abilities. Which is a good job because I hate Pinot Grigio, except the days I slum it, then it is the best for that day.
