Viral Flower Hack Experiment 🌷 #tulip #flowers #tipsandtricks #flowercare

Let’s compare three viral flower hacks. I was surprised by the results, were you?

The pin prick method is where you prick the stem of the flower below the bloom. It’s theorized that the pin prick allows air in the stem to escape because tulip stems are hollow. It also helps water flow up to the stem into the bud.

The copper penny method is when you drop a penny into the vase of water. Copper is a fungicide so the theory is that copper penny will naturally kill the bacteria and fungi that grows in your vase. Killing the bacteria will help lengthen the lifespan of your flowers. The trick here is to use a penny minted before 1982 in the United States because it has 95% copper.

The Sprite and bleach method is when you add 1/4 cup of Sprite and a cap full of bleach into your vase. The sugar in the Sprite is said to act like flower food and the bleach is meant to kill any bacteria in the water.

Initially, I thought that the Sprite and bleach hack would be the winner for longevity of bloom and cleanest water. However I found that the high sugar content caused the blooms to open and mature the fastest and even caused the water to look the murkiest. I also spotted mold on the stem. If you look closely, the stems in this bouquet was bleached white while the other three remained green. The stems were also the most wilted by the end of the week.

The copper penny method worked well but finding a penny in Canada or even an old American penny before 1982 can be tricky. The blooms lasted the second longest in the group of four. But I was surprised how dingy the water looked. It was still clear but it took on some colour, perhaps from the dirty penny. The stems were still crunchy and the flowers stood up the tallest.

The pin prick method is the winner for my experiment. Their peak bloom happened a little later than the rest and as a result they were also the last to wilt. The stems were still firm and crunchy but I did notice they were bending more than the coppery penny method. But the water was the clearest amongst the four groups.

Let me know which method you think won! Was your initial hypothesis correct?

This was so fascinating that I had to gind out why this works. This is what I found;
"Pricking the stem of a tulip with a pin or needle just below the flower head is a popular method to help tulips stand upright and last longer. The theory is that the prick allows air bubbles trapped in the hollow stem to escape, and helps water flow up to the bloom. Some also think that the pin prick causes the tulip to use energy to heal the wound, instead of growing taller."
So cool! Thanks for sharing!

Tulips are the only flower that keep growing after being cut, making a little hole at the top helps them absorb more light and stay straight and healthy longer. You can also cut the bottom of the stem in half vertically (1/2 inch) to help the water reach the head of the flower faster which also helps them stay alive longer; florist tip!

It seems to me that control group and pin prick group look very similar, but as I don't understand how the pin works I can really give a finished opinion. The video is lovely, show how the flowers even cutes out of their root are steel alive ❤

I’m concerned for whoever thought it would be a good idea to put bleach in the flower water.

The control worked the best. That's why you have a control in an experiment. Don't fix what's not broken.

My mother taught me to cut the stems of flowers at an angle never let any leaves on the stems go in the water i always use flower food in the water roses i cut not only at an angle but also to cut upwards on all thick woody stems too, to give maximum chance of taking water up. Also my father always took the flowers out of the house at night & stood them in the garage bringing them back in each morning it really does work, making sure to keep the water topped up each day. This way they they last way longer ive had Rose's last 14 days plus 💐 make sure your vase is squeaky clean before use. Some say asprin works in the water but flower food is cheap enough to keep a few packets in the cupboard on stand by. I also like the old tip of floristry tape put across the top of your vase in a criss-cross pattern helps to support the stems.

I appreciate that you took the time and made such efforts to create a thorough, informative, aesthetically pleasing video! I found everything about this fascinating and interesting. Because I’m almost 50 and my eyes aren’t what they used to be (no fault of yours) I had to pause to read the results clearly- otherwise, wonderful! I especially appreciate that I didn’t have to search all over in the comments and elsewhere to see the results- all in one video: THANK YOU!!!

Based on what you said in the description, I'd try pin prick + penny vs pin prick only next time. This was cool to watch and i had no idea blooms still opened and closed once already picked!
