Valve Index Killer? HP REVERB G2 Impressions

Here are my first impressions on the HP Reverb G2. SO far I have been enjoying it, but that's not without running into a few issues. This is not a full review just yet, but I think you'll have a pretty clear idea of whether or not you should go for this headset at this point.

I will be streaming with the G2 on twitch here:

Just addressing a few people's concerns with the tracking and using studio lights. I do want to be clear I don't normally have studio lights on at all, I only have them on here for the purposes of filming the video. Cameras definitely need light. The Studio lights are off on any other occasion and were off during the hours and hours I spent with this headset, with the exception of the 20-30 minutes of recording me playing specifically for this video. Hopefully you all understand!

Much Love,
Thrill

For anyone wondering, the intro song is called “Let’s Bounce” by Jules Gaia

I think I'm going to get this, and use the index knuckles I already have with it.
Fingies, and good visuals!

"Usable, but could be better" is the perfect description for psvr

Congrats for the VR Award: Best VR-Influencer :-)
I'm really looking forward to my G2. I'm coming from a PSVR and I think it will be a huge upgrade in every way. I never tried a other headset so I can't miss the better tracking and the wider FOV. I assume the higher resolution will be breathtaking :-D

This was a great first impressions video. When people started talking about the visuals being better than the Index, I started to get upset and feel like I made the wrong choice (since I only got my Index in September). Now that I know there are so many tradeoffs, I'm happy with my decision. Index is clean with its 144hz visuals and huge FOV. Thanks Thrill!

When I first set up and tested out my Reverb G2, my heart sank because the controller tracking was literally comparable to what you showed in your review of the *"DPVR HMD VR E3 4K GAMING COMBO".*
BUT...
It wasn't until a day later that I realized that the headset looks for a series of staggered point lights on the controllers, and MY ENTIRE ROOM IS LINED WITH STRING LIGHTS.

going through an awful break up so these videos are always a big help keeping me dotracted, thank you Thrill Seeker

Thrill keep in mind that Studio lights, Reflective windows and other such things could throw off the tracking as it is tracked by the lights. they arent using the Oculus's Infrared tracking as they patented that. so those types of things could mess with the tracking in certain amounts.

kicking off the video with that catchy electro-swing, we need more of that.

Mine's arriving at the end of November. I'll miss the Rift s tracking but I'm a sim guy, so I'll live with it 👍

Haven’t seen your review yet but every review I’ve seen so far seems to play down any flaws. Hoping it’s honest and good.
Post-Watch edit: This seems more legitimate than the other reviews I have seen. Thanks thrill (or good job on being good at hiding the truth if that is the case, lol)

Thanks for posting about its flaws as well as it's strengths. I don't feel like many other YouTubers even brought up the lack of touch sensor on controllers buttons but it makes a huge difference for myself. Keep up these great videos dude!

Glad I jumped to the index instead, the 120hz is fantastic too and the screen is alright for me personally (especially with super sampling) Great review, thanks Thrill!

I don't know if anyone's said this already, but it seems HP is aiming to become the go-to brand for the professional environment VR niche (like online VR conferences where you're sat in an online meeting room with a Dutch CFO to your left and a Japanese CEO to your right while looking at a PowerPoint). The price being enthusiast-grade, the top of the line resolution, and the sub-par refresh rate and field of view (as far as an enthusiast device goes) tells me this is probably going to be bundled alongside an HP workstation (those with Xeon processors and Nvidia Quadro GPUs) that high ranking executives go for rather than a 3090. I've seen an eerie amount of executives talk about how despite having a comfortable office, a clear microphone, and a great camera, they despise work-from-home meetings because they feel sharing a physical space with whoever they're talking with is vital. Beyond that, the idea of cutting down on intercontinental business trips by moving to a sort of professional VR chat sounds like heaven for people who want to work more efficiently or simply spend more time with their families. I mean, even ignoring the fact that a 1.5k VR setup is undisputably a dirt-cheap alternative when compared to the total price of a trip, you can't put a price tag on spending more with your family (you can, however, put a very pretty price tag on not having to go on an exhausting 3-day trip which slashes productivity). I think HP knows where they're going and they're partially using the videogame market to give their new project some momentum and attention from more lucrative clients. This doesn't mean they're being slimy in any way; the more people that buy their products the better for them. I just think they're being very smart about who they're planning to primarily cater to.

I don't care about any limitations this headset has. I'll by any headset if it isn't made by Oculus.
