READ: I used to be like every other person commenting here, I have used Qtips my whole life not worrying about the potential hazards, today I went to the doctor for an annual physical while coincidentally experiencing ear pressure, he checked my ears and saw two very cluttered ear canals, I was surprised because I cleaned my ears twice a week with Qtips. The Qtips over time were forcing back ear wax and causing more to build up. The doctor blasted my ears with water and it was disgusting what I saw come out. Unfortunately my left ear still has water in it several hours after the appointment and I am now unsure of how to clean my ears but I definitely will not be using Qtips again!

Trust me, ear infections are NOT worth it. I’ve been getting 4 hours of sleep a night because I woke up from ear pain ;-;

Very good. Very useful content, Antonio. Thank you.
My main use for q-tips is cleaning tape recorder heads and any piece of electronic circuitry which is best to be reached by a cotton swab. Typically moving and touching parts - switches, potentiometers, contacts, cleaning remaining flux from a PCB, deoiling or degreasing parts. A cotton swab moistened in some isopropyl alcohol, it really can do wonders to fix things.

I've worked with veterinarians for a few years and every vet I've worked with has strongly recommended against putting hydrogen peroxide in the ear canal since it can cause serious damage to the tissue, so it's probably not a good idea to put it in your own ears.

I would recommend cleaning your ears in the shower by applying water on the ears and manually clean the outer ear. Then a quick clean/dry to the outer ear with Q tips should be safe. For the inner ear just visit a doctor once in a while and let him do the job for you (once per year or even less than that frequency).

I had a nurse tell me once to not insert the swab, but rather to start it in that bottom depression (the concha) and swab it sideways, following the natural contours of the cartilage. You never press in. Then use a cloth or rag to clean the outside of the ear and the outer lobe.

I don't use Q-Tips (aka cotton buds) to clean my ears for the reasons stated: they're basically ramrods for ear wax. I do however use the loop of a clean bobby pin (hairpin). It's as close to the device that ENT doctors use to remove ear wax as you can get without buying it (they use a softer plastic loop on a stick, usually). To use it properly, you need to insert it into the canal and *gently* trawl around and back *OUT* towards the exit. The key is *gently*, you're not there to carve a new surface!
Things to also remember: (1) most wax is fairly close to the exit to the canal and not much deeper (unless you've been using Q-Tips!), (2) the skin of the canal is quite thin and easy to tear (and thus get infected) if you're too vigorous or if you're doing it after showing/bathing/swimming when the skin is soft.
I've not had any problems when following these rules and my ears are cleaned daily. If in doubt, just buy the device the doctors use with a very soft plastic loop on a stick, it's very hard to do any damage with that.

I already knew some of these information
but still thanks for sharing it to us specially for the ones who doesn't know about these things yet!

Among non-hygienic uses, I use q-tips to get the dead skin off my lips after a shower. That plus a good moisturizer = no more chapstick!
I also rinse out my ears in the shower. If you regularly stick each ear toward the spray, work your jaw, and clean the outer ear as directed after, it's usually enough to keep the wax soft and doing it's thing. (Doesn't hurt to use a diluted peroxide rinse before a physical exam... your doc appreciates it.)

Q-tip uses: applying medicine such as tea-tree-oil or antibiotics to a cut/wound, carefully cleaning the nose or removing makeup (you could use other things though)

They also look pretty when they're on fire, like most things. Jk, fire is pretty though.

True about the ear candles. I had a friend who was addicted to them so I burnt one alone, as in not in an ear, and voila there was all the "ear wax" she kept telling me came out!

I like to smoke ear candles while gargling some fine French brandy (you know, from France).
As for the ears... I either use a loofah attached to a wooden dowel or a Swiffer duster. Do I recommend trying any of this in your home? I certainly do not. But your backyard is a perfectly suitable location.
