In this episode of the Mikhaila Peterson Podcast, I spoke with men's style coach Tanner Guzy. With the focus on male fashion shifting dramatically over the last few decades, Tanner thinks a lot of men need a sense of direction, and that finding a style of one’s own is an essential part of self-expression. In Tanner’s words, there’s a need for “aesthetic literacy” that isn’t quite being fulfilled.

We covered several topics related to men's fashion, such as how personality is expressed through style. We talked about suits and shoes. The changing aesthetic of Western culture and masculinity. The three archetypes of male fashion: rugged, refined, and rakish. We also went into short tangents about Guzy's personal life, his joys as a father, and his time spent as a missionary for the Church of Latter-day Saints.

Tanner Guzy is a men's style coach, author, and TEDx speaker. His goal is to help boost men’s confidence and attractiveness by upping their fashion game. He is the author of The Appearance of Power: How Masculinity is Expressed Through Aesthetics.

I began dressing how I wanted these past few months and I feel way more confident and content with myself because I’m basically doing what I want and not being afraid of what people think. I have a different style but I can pull it off and people like it more. Idk, a lot about what he’s saying is true though. Men should add some depth to their style depending on what they want to portray about themselves. If you’re a mysterious guy, you can still dress mysteriously and still be detailed

My husband was dressing in shirts from second hand stores at high school. In his last year fashion caught up with him and everyone wondered why he was looking so stylish all of a sudden! He walks alone.

Two weeks ago I´ve been to a personal style and colour guide for the first time. Good investment, learned a lot! Now I change my wardrobe step by step. Got new shoes, scarf, colours... Love this sh*t. I feel more confident and show up different. I also get recognized by women and get treaded different when I go shopping. Develop style, men! Work out. Get your stuff together. The ROI is high.... A 40+ Gentleman from Europe. Thanks Mikhaila for this piece of gold!

Mikhaila said, "So, you get people to look at the ideal version of themselves." I like the guests you bring on. It feels like the wild west sometimes. I really appreciated some of the things Tanner was talking about. I liked his 3 architypes. Obviously, they are overgeneralized, but this is helpful. On his scale I am a Rugged, Refined, Rake in that order with my current fashion choices. I liked how he mentioned, what do you see in the mirror when you look at you. Does that have an impact on you? I would see a better version of myself if I switch Refined and Rake. Thanks for the new perspective. Life is an unfolding experiment. Thanks for sharing yours.

I asked my ex GF (who i later became friends with) what she found attractive about me. She said I had the perfect amount of arm hair. Which just totally blew my mind. Then I asked another girl what she found attractive about me when we first met. SHE said it was because I had long eyelashes! Which just makes me feel like, I give up! I am totally at the mercy of women. Who the heck knows what they find attractive. They all half crazy anyway.

Hey Mikhaila, just wanted to encourage you. Was so pleased to hear you say you are reading the Bible and praying recently. I was also lost in the media industry, desperate for meaning to life's emptiness, and through a series of circumstances, found Christ as my Lord and Saviour. This would never have happened if God didn't first let me hit rock bottom. I had to be broken first, to cry out for mercy. There is now no doubt the Bible is the truth and that Jesus is the way to be reconciled back to God. I thank Him every day for that gift of brokenness that lead to finding true life and peace. I will pray for you in your journey of faith, Its clear that God can use your talents for the Kingdom, and He will use you as a vessel to share this hope with others.

I lost more than 30 pounds in less than 3 month by eating healthy, intermitted fasting and working out 2-3 times a week and changed my wardrobe completely. It feels like I started a new life. People treat me so differently. Not just the other sex. Everywhere I go people treat me with more respect. Next stop is a chiropractics to improve my posture. Looking forward to the point when I am completely in shape.
