How is Jesus Considered a Messiah in Islam? | Dr. Shabir Ally

Dr. Shabir Ally responds to a viewer's question about the term "Messiah" in the Quran. Jesus is called the Messiah, a title explained through various interpretations, such as "one who anoints" or "one who travels." In contrast, the Bible associates the Messiah with a future king who brings peace, a role Jesus is expected to fulfill upon his return according to Christian belief. The term "Christ" from Greek, equivalent to "Messiah," means "anointed," suggesting a consecrated role. Dr. Shabir suggests that the Quran acknowledges Jesus as the Messiah, reflecting a recognition of his special status, but does not elaborate on the specifics of this title. This inclusion serves to bridge understanding between Muslims and Christians.

In The New Testament a women started pouring oil on Jesus’ head, anointing him.
For a book that’s suppose to be bridging the gap between the Old and New Testament, the Quran doesn’t do a very good job. Especially with key subjects.

Here's how Jesus is the messiah in Christianity. He fulfilled all the prophecies foretold by God's prophets including the prophecies about the crucifixion, atonement for mankind's sins, and resurrection which Islam denies.

I´ve born and raised in a Christian family and I´m delighted to know better about the Islam and I must confess I didn´t know about the vision of the Islam about Jesus and how Mary is respected in way sometimes we can´t find in some Christina denominations. Thanks for sharing with us this precious knowledge with all us. Regards from Brazil.

Jew: Jesus was not the Messiah because he did not reign over Israel and conquer the world.
Christian: You ignore all the prophecies stating how the Messiah must be rejected and killed. Psalm 22, Isaiah 53, Zechariah 13. Jesus will return again and rule over the world forever.
Muslim: Jesus is the Messiah even though we have no idea what that means.

Quran 3:48 gave the hint why he was called the messiah. Allah (swt) taught him the torah directly by himself and anointment is needed to get that favour.

What does 'messiah' mean according to the Qur'an, if we ignore the baggage and pre conceived ideas from corrupted books and trust the narrative of the Qur'an to give us answers?

Some dictionary meanings of the word:
مسح
Miim-Siin-Ha = to wipe/rub/stroke, passing one's hand over something
For some Qur'anic context on the usage of the word (root) see the following Aayaat:
masaha vb. (1)
impv. 4:43, 5:6,
n.vb. 38:33
(from an online dictionary)

What was 'wiped' about Eissa ibn Maryam? Perhaps some details and history about him, maybe even his name?

To learn more along these lines, see the Marvelous Quran YouTube channel, learn about the Organic Qur'anic Methodology (first), and then watch the series on Eissa ibn Maryam, along with many other eye opening segments on a wide range of topics.

It amazes me how people can think another person can be God, or God needs to be man to be God.
No different than a person believing an animal is God, or a moon, a sun, a star, a tree is God,
there is no difference because all of them are created, they are creatures,
whereas God is the Creator, one Creator, one God.

God is Unique and Supreme unlike anything we know or can imagine.
Can our self pride be overcome to understand that?

Christians, our brothers and sisters in humanity think that it is guidance to accept a man as God,
yet THAT is the trial for one to step outside of, of their pride of self kind
and realize God is Perfect, Unique,
beyond and above all Creations, in control of everything/everytime.

They started strong... then they went on a weird tangent with the word "anointed" .
The Hebrew word for "anointed" appears frequently in context to kings (good and bad) and priests in the OT Bible.. But the word MESSIAH only appears in the book of Daniel 9, where the MESSIAH is prophecized to die for our sins-- Isaiah 53. Amen.

I like this: We all have a little messiah in us. Messiah= messenger. You choose which messenger is appropriate at any given time.

I swear this channel's videos always have plenty of likes (a lot more than dislikes) but then have comments that are either hateful or just very critical. I'll say something positive: this is yet another great explanation by Shabir Ally. May Allah reward him.

Mashallah I love your videos. I am a speaker and study of Sanskrit and I would like to raise awareness on the fact that Jesus Christ in sanskirt is Krishta ख्रीष्टः the Greek kristos is even coming from an even older indo European root in India, but yes the names Jesus himself would have used would have been more the ones in the holy land such as the Hebrew Aramaic and Arabic equivalents.

Please accept a debate with the Christian Prince to answer and reconcile a multitude of questions Muslims have about Mohammed, the Quran and Hadiths. Thank you.
