How to Turn Off the Gas to a Gas Stove

Welcome to this instructional video on how to turn off the gas. Usually, you’d want to turn off the gas because you smell gas even though you turned off all you igniters.

In order to shut down the gas to your stove, first make sure your stove is completely turned off. Then, locate the gas valve by pulling the stove away from the wall.

Once you located the gas switch, turn gas valve one-quarter turn until it stops. Usually, this is a ball valve with a lever handle. When the gas valve is in the off position, the handle will be perpendicular to the direction of the gas pipe.

Lastly, turn on your burner to ensure the gas is off and contact a maintenance technician to come to address the assess.

Im not trying to sound like a goofy here😅 because I am 44 and have never messed with a shut off valve on a stove but I havent. As a single mother I need to know these things to protect my family. You think u just made a utube video but you have done so much more!!! My pilots dont turn on so I know my gas is off! Yay🎉! And of course Thank you so much!!!

Great tips, however if you smell gas enough to pull your stove out to turn off the gas line, DON'T check to see if one of your burners will ignite as your next verification step. Open the doors and windows and go outside until you can't smell gas. When you can't smell gas, then maybe try the igniter suggestion from the video, but be sure about no gas lingering. If you're not comfortable, call your local gas company, all of which should have 24/7 contact.

Thank you so very much for your perfect instruction! I have several avacado 🥑 pits in h2o on my counter next to my stove top and one toppled over spilling h2o into my stove top. It then started clicking as if I were attempting to ignite a burner which I was not and all burners are off. Rather than call the maintenance fellow at 1:00 AM I was able to successfully turn off the gas line to the stove top! Tomorrow he can fix it and now I can go to bed! 🛌 Great video! Thanks so much!

Thanks for the video. Would it be safer to turn on the stove, then turn off the gas valve? That's to be sure the excess of the gas burned out.

I thought I had found the video to help me disconnect a gas hob ...but there is no handle ..to shut off the gas supply just nut from gas supply connecting to a nut on the hob ..
I can turn off my main gas supply elsewhere in the house, but am worried about the disconnecting hob, when I turn the gas back on will I have a gas leak ?
