Kotaku Gaslights over the Minecraft Movie

When a company like Microsoft invests in turning their colossal product Minecraft into a movie franchise, Minecraft; a product beloved by millions worldwide, one would think that a movie based on the game would aim for mass appeal, right?—capturing not just the 12 year old's, but anyone who has ever played the blocky game, yeah?

According to Kotaku, no, you'd be wrong, "Sorry, The Minecraft Movie Isn't Meant To Be For You." Well, that can't be right.

Upon the release of the upcoming Minecraft movie featuring Jason Momoa as Masculine GameStop Customer, and Jack Black as Steve, there was a very clear consensus that this movie looks truly terrible. Minecraft, the game, has a unique aesthetic to it; that makes it look like Minecraft. We've seen creators online make Minecraft shorts and skits playing on the idea of Minecraft in live action that look leagues better than anything in this trailer.

The designs of the creatures looks awful and unappealing to everyone seeing this trailer, but then we get access media journalists like John Walker at Kotaku who are ready to gaslight you that you gut reaction that this Minecraft trailer is awful is actually wrong and you should feel bad about it. Well is the Minecraft movie for you? Who is it for? Let's break it down.

"It's for kids" is a shorthand excuse for the movie to be shit. Beauty & The Beast, The Little Mermaid, Aladdin, all the movies of the Disney Renaissance were for kids but the key difference is those movies still told a story that appealed to kids and parents.

I hate when so-called journalists and critics use "It's for kids!" as an excuse to be lazy. Kids are not stupid, they know when a product is crap. Even if it's for kids you should do better to make it good not as an excuse to phone it in by saying "Hey look here's Jack Black!" and jingling keys.

I dont care anymore, when the things I watched as a kid got turned into garbage I just walked away and have zero desire to consume the things made by people with the same mindset as the ones that ruined the things I use to love. When i was a kid the movies and animations had a soul. They were inspiring us to become what we are today as humans. Allowing my kids to watch that if i had them? It would be pure disgrace to me as a father.
