I mean, I BOUGHT my teacher a katana after he was impressed with the broadsword I brought to school my senior year. He still has it hanging in his classroom.

Maybe just out of innocence he thought “I’m not gonna hurt anyone with it” and thought it was ok.

I did exactly this in Grade 9 or 10 learning about ancient Greece & Rome. I made a short sword - real metal, real hilt wrapped in hockey tape to look like leather. I brought it unsharpened because when I initially asked to make the sword they simply told me it couldn't be sharp. They thought I would be making a wooden sword I think. The sword I brought was easily 4 or 5 lbs and pointy at the end. Still got a good grade, and the teacher was pretty chill about it and just asked me to leave it in my locker until the day was over.

He probably didn’t think it was bad because he didn’t intend to use as a weapon in the first place it’s just a cool object to the kid

My biology teacher once said "right now isn't the time to discuss SpongeBob's sexuality...we can about it after the quiz"

Worked as a school bus monitor, and one day, the school principal met the bus to pull two of the kids off the bus, with a severe looking police officer. We didn't get told what this was about, but the kids were talking outside.

As I'm listening, though, I realize what's happened, and I go flying off the bus. Turns out one of the kids threatened to shoot the other one in the face.

Now, I'd had issues with these two repeatedly on the bus, but I know what's going on.

Me: "Principal Roberts, I think I can explain this."

Principal: "You know about this?"

Me: "No and yes. Tyler and Devon are in the same Fortnite team."

Principal: "Fortnite."

I start explaining Fortnite to a cop, a counselor, and the principal. It's a 3rd person shooter/building game that had hit pretty big, and was free to play. Devon was the team's captain, and part of their tactic was having Tyler go into enemy areas, draw enemies after him, and draw them into Devon's ambush. It was a solid tactic, but Tyler got distracted by airdrops, and would go after them mid-kite, which led to his team getting pulled out of position, and then they get eliminated. What Devon was threatening was to shoot Tyler's character in the face the next time he went loot-hoarding. Not to actually shoot him in the face. They literally talked about Fortnite every day, for their entire ride, so I was very familiar with it.

I explained this with all the language of a lifelong gamer, and the Principal's eyes by the end had this "Not like this" look to them as gamer terms flooded in. My driver was laughing into her steering wheel, and Devon and Tyler are staring open mouthed.

Cop checks to make sure this is true, and Devon and Tyler are like, "You play video games?"

"Longer than both of you have been alive combined."

Great moment, and they stopped giving me crap on the bus after that.

I totally get why he got in trouble, its understandable considering what's happened at schools in the past. But to him he didn't intend to use it as a weapon, it's a cool piece of art and history. He thought it would be cool to show everyone

Meanwhile in anime kids are running around school with 6ft scythes and the teachers don't blink an eye

As someone who fenced in high school, I forgot that walking around with giant blades isn't normal (granted fencing blades aren't sharp at all)

I don’t think it’s the kids fault, he seemed genuine. Besides his parents didn’t seem to stop him

This reminds me of a kid who was in my middle school chorus class who brought a literal knife to school and was showing it to the other kids. When the teacher confronted him and tried to take it away he said " its not even that sharp!" as if that would justify this whole damn knife in his pocket lol
